Al-Habibiyyah: Championing Interfaith Harmony in Nigeria

By Ibrahim Abdulmalik

Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society, a quintessential Islamic organization established in 2003 under the leadership of Imam Fu’ad Adeyemi as the National Missioner, has remained at the forefront of promoting interfaith harmony in Nigeria and beyond.

Through its numerous humanitarian programs, religious engagements, and community-based initiatives, the Society has consistently demonstrated its commitment to fostering peace, unity, and mutual understanding among adherents of different faiths, particularly the two major Abrahamic religions — Islam and Christianity.

One of the most remarkable avenues through which the Society promotes interfaith harmony is its annual Ramadan Food Bank Programme.

Although the programme is organized within the mosque premises during the holy month of Ramadan, it transcends religious boundaries and does not operate under an exclusive religious identity.

The initiative is open to everyone, irrespective of religious affiliation, allowing both Muslims and non-Muslims to participate in the breaking of fast and share in the spirit of compassion, love, and communal coexistence.

Over the years, the programme has attracted notable personalities and religious leaders from different faiths and backgrounds. Among such dignitaries are leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria, including John Cardinal Onaiyekan, the former Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja.

The Society has also hosted representatives of the United States Government, including ambassadors and diplomatic entourages, who have joined Muslims during the Ramadan fast-breaking sessions as a symbol of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

In the same spirit of inclusiveness, the Society’s annual Zakat disbursement programme is not limited to Muslims alone.

Although Zakat is an Islamic charitable obligation primarily meant to support the less privileged, the Society has consistently extended support to vulnerable Christians as part of the beneficiaries of the programme. This gesture reflects the Society’s belief that humanity should always take precedence over religious differences.

Since the inception of the Zakat initiative, Christians and people of other faiths have continued to benefit from the programme, thereby strengthening communal bonds and promoting social harmony.

Furthermore, the doors of the mosque remain open to people from all walks of life who seek for assistance and support. The Society regularly provides humanitarian aid ranging from food supplies, shelter, clothing, payment of hospital bills, educational support, and other forms of welfare assistance.

These interventions are offered without discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, or social status, making the Society a beacon of hope for many vulnerable individuals and families.

Another notable contribution of the Society towards interfaith understanding is the Interfaith television programme (The Abrahamic Mission) anchored by Imam Fu’ad Adeyemi.

The programme serves as a platform where leaders and scholars from both Islam and Christianity come together for meaningful dialogue and intellectual engagement on issues affecting society.

Through constructive conversations and mutual respect, the programme continues to promote peaceful coexistence and deepen understanding between followers of the two faiths.

Against the backdrop of these laudable efforts and many other impactful initiatives, Imam Fu’ad Adeyemi and Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society have received both local and international recognition. The United States Government has frequently invited the National Missioner to events and conferences centered on interfaith dialogue, religious tolerance, and peacebuilding.

In recognition of his dedication and unwavering commitment to interfaith harmony, Imam Fu’ad Adeyemi has also received several awards and commendations from international bodies and diplomatic institutions.

In a world replete with hightening religious intolerance, Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society continues to stand as a shining example of how interfaith dialogue could be used as a tool for peace, unity, compassion, and national development.

Through its humanitarian activities, inclusive programmes, and commitment to dialogue, the Society has continued to set a commendable standard for interfaith harmony in Nigeria and across the globe.
