My Christian Sister Died a Muslim, but Something I Saw at Her Burial Gave Me Deep Introspect – Bode George

In a video posted on YouTube from 2:59, elder statesman and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Chief Bode George opened up about a deeply emotional moment in his life that caused him to reflect on the meaning of life, death, and faith. He spoke about his late sister, who was born and raised a Christian but later converted to Islam after marrying a Muslim. According to him, her burial rites under Islamic tradition offered him a rare, sobering experience that changed how he views religious practices surrounding death.

Chief George, known for his nationalistic views and advocacy for unity, explained how he fully supported his sister’s religious journey. He funded her and her husband’s pilgrimage to Mecca, celebrated her graduation from Quranic school, and even contributed to the building of a mosque in their community. Despite their different religious paths, the love and respect within the family remained intact. Her passing, however, exposed him to the depth and humility of Islamic burial practices, which left a lasting impression on him.

According to him, “My older sister married a Muslim. I sent her and her husband on the holy pilgrimage. She died… In fact, where they lived, they wanted to build a mosque, and I contributed. The day she graduated from the Quranic school, I was there. She was born a Christian, she was raised a Christian, but she passed on last year. And I saw something at that burial that gave me another introspection of what on earth life is all about. The way the Christians bury dead people and the way the Muslims bury—it’s a lesson. Before I got to her house, she had been wrapped up. I said, What is this?”
